Sotha aspires to marry his sweetheart Phalla, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. But a street altercation casts suspicion and blame on him, and he leaves home to seek a better fortune in Phnom Penh. While Phalla tries to forget Sotha, and consents to an arranged marriage, doubt remains in her heart that this is the correct choice…
Our Books and Meta-House invite you to an exhibition of comic art by Em Satya, on November 6th, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Em Satya is an artist who has worked in nearly every field of illustration. Most foreigners have seen his cartoons as ‘Nono’ in Cambodge Soir, and many Khmer readers have enjoyed his comic adaptations of classics such as Sopaset and Sovannasam.
Now, he presents his first comic in graphic novel format, funded with the help of literary aid project VALEASE.
‘Flower of Battambang’ is a graphic novel set in Battambang and Phnom Penh, shelved when the market for local comics experienced a downturn. Nearly two decades later, Em Satya has taken up his pen and finished the story, which has been assembled into one volume.
The Exhibition will open on November 6th (original art and signed prints will be on sale).
The graphic novel (in Khmer, French and English) will premiere on November 20th.
“A cartoonist, a pirate radio station, and the lost letters of a schizophrenic”
Dream cartoonist Jesse Reklaw (the syndicated “Slow Wave”) finds himself within the eye of a tempest when his latest comic depicts the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP staffed by Afghan refugees.
Downstairs, his roommate Fausto keeps to himself by creating lush soundscapes for his weekly pirate radio show and immersing himself in a second-hand photo album containing the lost letters of a schizophrenic. But Fausto’s quiet days are numbered as attention surrounding the cartoon threatens to bring his underground operation into the limelight.

[from Amber Carvan:]
Are you a comic artist in need of rehabilitation? If not, perhaps you
know one?
I’m looking for people to join me for a stint in:
———————————-
COMIC ARTIST REHAB
———————————-
Four artists who haven’t been as busy as they should commit to
drawing four panels every four days for four weeks.
Yes sirree, that’s 28 days of comic artist rehab!
The fine print
1. Artists in rehab must commit to completing the program – this
involves drawing four panels every four days. The comics can be stand-
alone or can be part of a longer story.
2. Artists in rehab will have to scan and upload their own comics to
the rehab blog. Participants will be given an upload schedule and
will have to adhere to it.
3. Comic artist rehab encourages the family and friends of artists
undergoing treatment to drop by to offer encouragement and support. A
comments facility will be available.
4. The program only allows for four participants at one time. If
further artists require rehab, future rounds can easily be arranged.
5. If, it works we can publish the comics in a book/zine. Whaddaya
reckon?
Email me if you’re interested or if you’d like to arrange for an
intervention for someone you know!
More info, URL etc, coming soon. Please circulate this notice to your
friends/networks.
Thanks,
Amber ‘I so need to go to rehab’ Carvan
