Through Richard Visick, I was introduced to the poster art of Leia Bell. Leia lives in Salt Lake City, where she designs posters for the shows at Kilby Court, her husband’s all-ages music venue. Leia’s posters are quieter and more personal than what is usually seen in the fabulously over-the-top world of rock poster graphics. Her subjects come from everyday life, such as her son gazing at some cicadas in the image shown here. Though she may not realize it, she is an alternative comics artist who works exclusively in the medium of screen printing.

Seattle cartoonist Richard Visick originally hails from Utah. For the past few years he has made mini-comics in which the mundane lives of young ‘hipsters’ are celebrated with warmth and offbeat humor. Being something of a Renaissance Man, Richard is also knowledgeable in the fields of library science, health care, and music. He is in the band Touchdown Eagle, and he makes posters for shows. He has collected a smattering of his rock flyer work in the zine “No One Gives a Fuck About Your Shitty Band”, issues 1 and 2, which he will sell you by mail if you contact him.

Seattle artist Tatiana Gill has received much acclaim for her work with writer Damon Hurd on the graphic novella “A Strange Day”, the story of a Cure fan in middle-America who runs into a kindred spirit when he shows up too early at a record store on the day the band’s new album is to be released. This book was recently released in French!
